SKINBOOSTER – HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT ONE?

We all more or less know that spring is the ideal time for skinbooster treatments. However, not all products have the same composition or work in exactly the same way. So how do we determine which one best suits our skin?

SKINBOOSTER

Skinboosters are specially formulated treatments that, in the hands of a skilled dermatologist, can work wonders on our skin. It's important to understand that these are not dermal fillers—their purpose is to deeply hydrate and soften the skin rather than “fill in” wrinkles. They’re ideal for tired, lax skin with fine lines and wrinkles, which has lost its natural glow.

Numerous skinboosters are available in the dermocosmetic market, each varying in composition, hyaluronic acid concentration and type, and added components, making each suited for different needs.

The original clinical skinboosters were developed by Restylane, a Swedish dermal filler manufacturer, to "enhance skin's hydro balance" by providing long-lasting, intense hydration from within. Simply put, skinboosters help keep the skin hydrated for a prolonged period.

How Do Skinboosters Work?

Most skinboosters are made with hyaluronic acid, which has the power to attract and retain up to 1,000 times its weight in water. This feature makes it a gold standard in moisturizers and skincare serums. But its effects go beyond hydration; clinical studies have shown that hyaluronic acid also boosts collagen production, improves skin elasticity, provides antioxidant benefits, accelerates wound healing, and reduces inflammation.

- Hyaluronic acid-based skinboosters - explains Dr. Jasmina Kozarev, a dermatologist with extensive anti-aging expertise - are injected under the skin using a precise device called a ‘dermal gun’ or manually after applying local anesthesia. These small deposits of skinbooster act as water reservoirs under the skin, providing long-lasting hydration. This enhanced hydration results in plumper, firmer, and visibly younger-looking skin.

Skinboosters also work on a deeper level by increasing collagen production. They activate fibroblasts, the cells responsible for producing collagen, resulting in improved skin elasticity. A Swedish study from 2014 showed that intradermal skinbooster injections led to increased collagen production and general skin elasticity improvement.

Dr. Kozarev’s Clinic uses only the best-known, most effective skinboosters, proven globally:

Restylane Vital/Vital Light Skinboosters

The "original" skinbooster, as it’s often called, was the first of its kind on the market. It contains partially cross-linked hyaluronic acid chains and up to 20 mg/ml of hyaluronic acid.

Cross-linking describes how tightly the hyaluronic acid chains are bonded, which affects the duration of the hydration effect. Imagine each chain as having 1,000 spots for water molecules to attach to. The more cross-linking, the fewer free spots for water molecules, but the longer-lasting the skinbooster effect.

Juvederm Volite

This newer skinbooster contains 13 mg/ml of cross-linked hyaluronic acid. Typically, two doses are required per treatment. Juvederm Volite has proven to deliver the same results with just one dose, where other products need three. This high efficiency is thanks to a patented formula by Allergan, providing elasticity and hydration for up to nine months.

Jalupro

Jalupro, one of the latest on the market, is excellent for intradermal skin revitalization. It includes hyaluronic acid and four essential amino acids (Glycine 50 mg, L-Proline 37.60 mg, L-Lysine 5.4 mg, L-Leucine) that enhance skin biorevitalization by rejuvenating the skin matrix, counteracting aging effects, and stimulating skin to become softer, more elastic, and firmer.

The Jalupro biorevitalization treatment is recommended for patients with significant skin wrinkling, deep lines, and reduced fibroblast function (cells in the subcutaneous tissue responsible for collagen production). The amino acids in Jalupro support fibroblasts in restoring their function, helping the skin regain elasticity, tone, and a youthful appearance.

Jalupro biorevitalization is painless or minimally uncomfortable, with a local anesthetic applied beforehand. Results are visible after the first session. For optimal results, a series of three treatments spaced 20 days apart is recommended, with effects lasting up to six months. This treatment also works well before or after sun exposure.

A session lasts about 45 minutes, with minor red spots at injection sites disappearing within three days.

- Skinboosters can be applied to the face, neck, and décolletage - says Dr. Jasmina Kozarev - At our Clinic, each patient undergoes a thorough skin assessment before treatment. We tailor the skinbooster type and procedure based on the skin’s condition and the desired outcome, using a specialized ‘dermal gun’ or manual micro-injections.

Results vary from person to person. Skinboosters with non-cross-linked hyaluronic acid typically show effects after one to two weeks. Recovery time depends on the application method: for manual injections, minor marks fade within two days, while with a specialized device, injection site recovery may take three to four days.
