In addition to all the negative aspects we already know by heart, there are a few good news: the sebum produced prevents premature aging, protects the skin, and people with oily skin typically have thicker skin and fewer wrinkles! The key to treating oily skin, of course, lies in finding a balance between excess and deficiency of oil while maintaining natural moisture.
The cause of oily skin is excessive sebum production by the sebaceous glands. Sebum is an oily substance that keeps the skin and hair supple and flexible. Excess sebum on the skin's surface disrupts the natural process in which the skin sheds dead cells (desquamation). The lipid composition of sebum that accumulates in the sebaceous glands can also trigger inflammation.
"We inherit a certain number of sebaceous glands from our parents, as well as their position in the skin," explains dermatologist Dr. Jasmina Kozarev. "Sometimes these sebaceous glands can be located quite deep, resulting in longer excretory ducts. All factors that lead to increased skin dryness (over-drying, inadequate products, excessive sun exposure, air pollutants, inadequate diet) can block this duct, which is a precursor to complications. The composition of sebum in the skin is also important, as it determines a range of factors from both external and internal environments. For instance, in individuals whose diets are high in saturated fats, the composition is unfavorable. On the other hand, those with a deficiency of unsaturated fatty acids in the cell membranes of the stratum corneum experience surface dryness and the formation of a plug in the sebaceous gland. There are also several cosmetic reasons why the condition of oily skin worsens—primarily the use of inappropriate products for skin type. Stress, humid climates, and "restless" hormones are also factors that contribute to oily skin.
There is no doubt that oily skin requires special care, but there are several things you can do at home to reduce and effectively control the amount of oil in your skin. Incorporating them into your new beauty routine will make your skin grateful, and you'll feel and look better!
1. Cleanse your face every morning and evening, especially after exercising! While doing this, resist the temptation to rub your skin, even when removing makeup. Rubbing irritates the skin.
2. Use “oil-free” and “non-comedogenic” care products. This type of cosmetics (cleansers, moisturizers, and makeup) will not clog pores or cause acne and blackheads.
3. Use gentle facial cleansers. Don’t make the common mistake of buying strong products that inherently dry out the skin. Too strong a product can further irritate the skin and trigger increased oil production.
4. Avoid oil- or alcohol-based facial cleansers— they will only irritate your skin further!
5. Provide daily moisture for your skin. Even if you have oily skin, it is very important to apply a moisturizer to keep it hydrated. To also protect your skin from harmful ultraviolet rays, look for a moisturizer that includes sun protection with SPF 30 or higher.
6. When outdoors, be sure to use sunscreen. This will protect your skin and prevent premature wrinkles, age spots, and photo-damage. To avoid acne, look for sunscreens that contain zinc oxide and titanium. Do not use sunscreens that contain fragrances or oils.
7. Use oil-free makeup. So, choose those that are water-based rather than oil-based.
8. Always—no matter how difficult it may sometimes seem—remove makeup from your face before sleeping! But, this is mandatory!
9. Use paper tissues throughout the day to absorb excess oil from your face. Gently dab your face, holding for a few seconds. Do not drag the tissue across your face, as this will only spread excess oil to other parts of your face.
10. This may be the hardest part: try not to touch your face throughout the day! Avoiding this spontaneous action requires self-control, but it will be easier if you know that touching your face spreads dirt and bacteria from your hands to other parts of your face. Touch your face only when cleansing, applying products, or makeup, and always with previously washed hands.
While every person's skin is different and requires a special approach, these general actions can prevent complications with oily skin.
To make the care of problematic skin easier and dermatologically accurate, Dr. Jasmina Kozarev has formulated two products that are powerful allies in the beauty routines of individuals with oily skin. With regular use, these products reduce sebum secretion, the thickness of the superficial skin layer, and prevent skin colonization by bacteria. The skin becomes purified, free of imperfections, and with even pigmentation.
ACNA QUIT LOTION
This product is designed for gentle cleansing and refreshing of the skin, as well as for removing oily deposits. It is formulated with panthenol, beta hydroxy acid, and components that prevent skin dryness. It is recommended as a cleansing agent for conditions with increased sebaceous gland activity. It does not dry out the skin and has a mild exfoliating effect. The product does not need to be rinsed off.
ACNAQUIT GEL
This product, along with Acnaquit Lotion, forms a highly effective system for the care of oily skin, skin with blackheads, and other imperfections. It contains retinol and a UV mineral filter. It does not clog pores, and the formulation is based on a lightweight oil-free formula with hydrating and soothing components.
